I've never experienced this sign-a-petition
online experiement (concept?) before, but it
reminds me - and this is going back a few years -
of the questionable-ness of www.savekaryn.com
Karyn, was some pre-Sex and the City, New Yorkian,
sad-o-holic shopoholic lady, who managed to run
up $20k+ worth of debt buying shoes and handbags,
and whatnot, and asked the Internet community to
help her pay off her debts - and they did, but
mostly because the very incredulity of her
aim generated so much interest (dail-up surfers
were starving for unique content back in those
days) that the sheer volume of people who passed
through her site consequently sorted things out.
The site still exists, by the way, but I think
the Web's life-span has generated too much
cynicism for a similar thing to happen again?
